To enable the impartment of a soft touch, shrinkage resistance and pilling resistance to animal hairs by treating the animal hairs with a treating agent containing a specific hydroxyalkyl phosphine, an alkali and an alkaline protease as active ingredients.
This treating agent comprises 0.1-60 pts.wt. of one or more kinds of a hydroxyalkylphosphine of the formula [R1 is a 1-10C hydroxyalkyl; R2 and R3 are each a 1-10C (hydroxy)alkyl] and its derivatives, preferably hydroxypropyl phosphine, 0.005-1.5 pts.wt. (converted into NaOH) of an alkali and 0.001-15 pts.wt. of an alkaline protease active ingredients. The treating agent is used to prepare a treating bath containing 0.1-60 g/L of the phosphine compound, 0.005-1.5 g/L of the alkali and 0.001-15 g/L of the protease. The top silvers of animal hairs are immersed in the treating bath within a temperature range of from the ordinary temperature to 60°C.
