To provide a catalyst composition that further improves power generation performance by activating oxygen reduction reaction in a cathode (oxygen side electrode) of a fuel cell.
This catalyst composition contains: a carbide of polypyrrole and/or polypyridine; and a transition metal containing the transition metal coordinated to nitrogen derived from polypyrrole and/or nitrogen derived from polypyridine, and a simple substance of the transition metal. In the catalyst composition, a part of the transition metal is coordinated to nitrogen derived from polypyrrole and/or polypyrrole contained in the carbide of polypyridine, and/or nitrogen derived from polypyridine, and a part is contained as the simple substance of the transition metal. The catalyst composition can activate oxygen reduction reaction in the oxygen side electrode of the fuel cell to improve power generation performance of the fuel cell.
