To obtain a catalyst capable of polymerization of a cyclic olefin in high activity by using an organic transition metal compound and an organoaluminium oxy compound.
The organic transition metal compound of formula I is used. In the formula, Cp represents a group having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton; M represents Zr or Hf; A and B, respectively, represent ligands of formulas II and III; and (x) is 0 to 3. In formula II, at least one of R1, R2 and R3 represents a 1-10C alkyl group substituted with a halogen and the others represent H, 1-10C alkyl or aryl. In formula III, R4, R5 and R6 independently represent H, 1-10C alkyl or aryl. A cyclic olefin of formula IV is polymerized, in which R7 to R18 independently represent H, a 1-20 hydrocarbon group, a substituent group having a halogen, an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom provided that R15 and R17 or R18, or R16 and R17 or R18 may join to form a ring; and (k) is 0 or an integer of 1 or more.
