To obtain a cyclic olefin polymer having excellent characteristics in high polymerization activity at high productivity by contacting a catalyst, which is made of an organic transition metal compound and an organoaluminumoxy compound, with a cyclic olefin.
An organic transition metal compound of formula I, an organoaluminiumoxy compound, which is constituted of (a) in the number of constituent units of formula II and (b) in the number of the constituent units of formula III and the value of b/(a+b) is in the range of 0 to 0.90, and a cyclic olefin of formula IV are used to obtain a polymer having recurring units of formula V. In formula I, Cp represents cyclopentadienyl or substituted cyclopentadienyl; M represents Zr or Hf; X represents a halogen; R1, R2 and R3 independently represent H, 1-10C alkyl or aryl, which may be substituted with a halogen. In formula III, R4 represents a 2-10C hydrocarbon group. In formula IV, R5 to R16 independently represent H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group provided that R13 or R14 and R15 or R16 may join to form a ring; and (k) is an integer of 0 or over.
