This chuck opening and closing device for gripping or canceling the grip of a workpiece by opening or closing a chuck pawl comprises a forward and backward moving member 130 inserted in one end of a through hole 100a, rotating integrally with the spindle 100, and movable forward and backward in the through hole 100a, an engaged part 130a formed at one end of the forward and backward moving member 130, and opening or closing the chuck pawl in a radial direction accompanied by the forward and backward movement of the forward and backward moving member 130, drive means (150-155) moving the forward and backward moving member 130 at least to one or the other side, and a stopper 160 installed to the spindle 100, capable of adjusting its position in a direction identical to the forward and backward moving direction of the forward and backward moving member 130, and coming into contact with the forward and backward moving member 130 so as to regulate the movement to one side.
