To provide a color image recorder without damaging a photoreceptor during image forming operation or its maintenance.
An intermediate transfer belt 3 is driven and controlled so that it can move to two positions, that is, a retreat position 4b not in contact with the photoreceptor 19 and a transfer position 4a in contact with the photoreceptor. An intermediate transfer body unit 2 is inserted from a paper jamming disposal opening/closing part 1A on the front side of the image recorder when the recorder does not form an image, and arranged in a state where the belt 3 is positioned at the position 4b, and constituted so that the belt 3 can move to the position 4a when the recorder forms the image. A unit in which the photoreceptor is housed is arranged at the transfer position from a perpendicular direction to the rotary shaft of the photoreceptor in a state where the belt 3 is at the position 4b.
