In the electrophoretic display including an electrophoretic display medium wherein three kinds of particles having optical characteristics and charge characteristics different from each other are dispersed in a solvent between a first transparent electrode and second and third transparent electrodes, when switching is performed from a first display state displaying a color to a second display state displaying a color different from that of the first display state, initialization driving including a first voltage applying step of repeating a voltage applying pattern made of a prescribed rectangular wave to the second electrode once or a plurality of times and a second voltage applying step of repeating a voltage applying pattern made of a prescribed rectangular wave to the third electrode once or a plurality of times is performed before the second display state is displayed.
