The electron emission element of a field emission type for emitting electrons with a strong electric field, is equipped with a three-dimensional structure pattern constituted of a plurality of protruded portions formed on a substrate. The ratio of the height of each of the protruded portions to a clearance between the adjacent protruded portions is 1:2 or higher and 1:6 or lower.
