To provide a fuel cell system and its starting method wherein the time up to a stable operation is reduced.
The fuel cell system (10) includes a fuel battery cell in which power generation is carried out by introducing a fuel gas containing hydrogen and an oxidizer gas containing oxygen, respectively, to a fuel electrode and an air electrode side flow passage (312) opposed to each other through an electrolyte. The system includes a starting device (4) in which at least the hydrocarbon gas and oxygen are introduced into the air electrode side flow passage (312) and complete oxidation reaction is carried out with the catalyst at the starting time of the fuel battery cell. Moreover, the starting method of the fuel cell system (10) includes a starting step in which the complete oxidation reaction is carried out with the catalyst by introducing at least a hydrocarbon gas and oxygen into the air electrode side flow passage (312) when starting the fuel battery cell.
