PURPOSE: To obtain a new halohydrocarbon useful as a raw material for perfumes by halogenating a new hydrocarbon synthesized from, as raw material, norbornadiene readily available in large quantities.
CONSTITUTION: This halohydrocarbon is expressed by formula 1 (X is a halogen), e.g. pentacyclo[5,4,21.7,13.6, 010.13,012.14]-4,5,8,9-tetrabromotetradecane. This compound of formula 1 can be obtained by halogenating a new hydrocarbon of formula 2. This new hydrocarbon of formula 2, in turn, can be prepared by dimerizing norbornadiene of formula 3 in the presence of a catalyst, a combination of a ruthenium complex and an N,N-dialkyl (meth)acrylamide. The norbornadiene of formula 3 can be easily obtained from acetylene and cyclopentadiene each of which can be obtained in large quantities by cracking naphtha. The compound of formula 2 is useful as a fuel for jet propulsion, a monomer for polymers, etc.
