To solve problems that display in a reflection mode is darker than display in a transmission mode in the case of the same incident light and that color reproduction ranges are different between the display in the reflection mode and the display in the transmission mode in a liquid crystal display element.
An area with different spectral transmission factors in the same pixel of a color filter is arranged, and the shape and size of the area are changed to enhance display performance in the reflection mode. The shape of size of the area is changed in adjacent pixels or panels to control a color reproduction range in transmission mode display and in reflection mode display without changing the quality and material themselves of the color filter material itself. A reflective metal layer is further provided on a switching element, and switching efficiency is prevented from being deteriorated by ensuring the reflective area sufficiently wide in comparison with a switching element area and the area with different spectral transmission factors.
