Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable writing operation without reference to whether a card is inserted faceup or not by providing electrode terminal parts at both end parts of a substrate and on both surfaces and making electric connections on either surface of the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A filmy liquid crystal layer 3 which has a smectic A phase is sandwiched between substrates 1A and 1B made of plastic. The terminal 4A of an electrode 2A on the substrate 1A is extended onto the top surface of the substrate 1A through its substrate flank and connected to a terminal 5A and a terminal 4B is also connected to a terminal 5B through similar structure. When this liquid crystal optical element is formed in a card shape, its writing is possible irrelevantly to whether the card is inserted faceup or facedown and the user eliminates the trouble of inserting the card by deciding the top and reverse of the card.
