A multistage reciprocating compressor includes a discharge capacity control device 53 comprising: solenoid valves 47a, 47b, 48a, 48b keeping respective inlet valves provided in a first cylinder 1 and a second cylinder 2 in an open condition; and a switching controller 50, based on the pressure of the compressed gas discharged from the second cylinder 2, controlling the solenoid valves 47a, 47b, 48a, 48b to have the minimum gas quantity by opening the inlet valves provided in a head side chamber and a rod side chamber of the first cylinder 1 and opening one of the inlet valves provided in a head side chamber and a rode side chamber of the second cylinder 2 to let only the other of the head side chamber and the rode side chamber of the second cylinder 2 operate for compression.
