To provide a novel optical recording medium having a recording layer whereon information is recorded by a recording laser light of a specific wavelength, enabling attainment of a sufficient reflectance by any reproducing laser light of a wavelength in the range of 400-900 nm and enabling execution of excellent reproduction.
The optical recording medium has the recording layer and a reflecting layer in this sequence on a light-transmitting base, and the recording layer contains organic dyestuff and a decomposition product of the organic dyestuff. The recording layer contains the decomposition product in a larger amount in weight than the organic dyestuff. The decomposition product is produced by a method wherein signals corresponding to the information to be recorded on the optical recording medium are written in by casting the recording laser light from the base side and after the information is recorded, at least a part of the organic dyestuff contained in the recording layer is decomposed.
