To obtain a pharmaceutical preparation smoother in spreadability over a gauze or the like, good in feeling when applied, as well as high in stability, by formulating an alkali metal alginate in a preparation comprising a non- reducing sugar and povidone iodine.
This pharmaceutical preparation is obtained by incorporating pref. 0.1-1.0 (more pref. 0.2-0.5) wt.%, based on the final preparation, of an alkali metal alginate such as sodium or potassium alginate [10-1,000 cP or so, pref. 10-500 cP or so, more pref. 20-350 cP or so in viscosity (at 1 g/100 mL, at 25°C, using a Brookfield type viscometer)] in a preparation comprising 50-90 (pref. 60-80) wt.% of a non-reducing sugar (e.g. white sugar, refined sugar, sucrose, glucose, dextrose) and 0.5-10 (pref. 1-7) wt.% of povidone iodine.
