Abstract:

PURPOSE: To effectively obtain the titled compound effectively used for preparing carbapenem (antibiotics), through a process for oxidizing 4-furanyl compound corresponding to a desired compound, by using bromine and sodium chlorite at a specific temperature, to 4-carboxy compound.

CONSTITUTION: An oxidizing agent obtained by combining bromine and sufficient quantity of sodium chlorite, is brought into contact with the compound of formula [R1 and R2 are H, C1-10 alkyl or fluoroalkyl which optionally has a substituent (OH, protected OH) on α-carbon; R3 is H or C1-10 alkyl; R4 is H or protective group of N; X-Z are H, halogen, C1-10 alkyl or alkoxy, or C6 or C10 aryl or aryloxy.] at about 0-20°C, to obtain 4-carboxyazetidin-2-one. Then the same is brought into contact with a mixture of C1-8 organic acid and alkali metal salt corresponding thereto, under the sufficient current density, whereby the titled compound can be easily obtained by using the raw material which has low toxicity, and can be easily handled with the improved efficiency.
