Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce, in high yield, the compound which is used as an agrochemical or medicine, by using a substituted benzylidene succinic acid ester and a substituted aromatic aldehyde as starting materials to effect twice reduction reactions, epoxidation and cyclization.

CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a substituted benzylidenesuccinic acid ester of formula I (R is alkyl; X1 is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy; m is 1W5) with a substituted aromatic aldehyde of formula II (X2 is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy; m is 1W5) is followed by acid treatment to give a compound of formula III. Then, the lactone ring is reduced to give an ester of formula IV, then reduced to give compounds of formulas Va and Vb. They are separated, the alcohol is protected, if necessary, then epoxidation is effected to convert the compound of formula Va into those of formulas VIa (Z is H, tetrahydropyranyl) VIb and the compound of formula Vb into formulas VIIa and VIIb. These products are ring-closed with an acid or alkali to give the compounds of formulas VIII and IX.
