Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable to detect the spinning tension of the optical fiber to be used for the control of a heating furnace without adding a flexural stress to the spun optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber preform 1 is heated and melted in a heating furnace 2, and then spun into an optical fiber 3. Therein, the spinning tension of the optical fiber is detected with a spinning tension detector 8 comprising a load sensor 8a attached to the optical fiber preform or its supporting material and a sensor output/spinning tension-converting circuit 8b for obtaining a spinning tension from the output of the load sensor. The temperature of the heating furnace is controlled on the basis of the output signal to constantly maintain the spinning tension of the optical fiber.
