Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exclude internal defects like species crystals and voids in fused silica articles prepared from silica particulates or a porous silica body.
SOLUTION: A green body prepared from silica glass particulates is placed in a chamber and dried and sintered by raising the temperature of a chamber to above 1720°C while purging the chamber with helium or applying a vacuum to the chamber. The sintered body is consolidated by raising the temperature within the chamber to at least 1750°C, introducing an inert gas into the chamber at a pressure less than about 6.9 Mpa, and cooling the chamber by maintaining the pressurized atmosphere to a temperature at least below the annealing point or the silica glass.
