PURPOSE: To obtain a siloxane copolymer excellent in film-forming property, crack resistance, refractive index controlling property and useful as a material for optical waveguides by reacting a diaryl type silane with an aryl type silane, hydrolyzing the reactional product, condensing the resultant hydrolyzate to afford a polymer precursor and condensing the precursor in a solid phase.
CONSTITUTION: A diarylsilanediol is dissolved in an aprotic solvent such as toluene or THF and an aryltrichlorosilane is added to the resultant solution and diarylsilane diol is reacted with aryltrichlorosilane and the resultant reaction mixture is charged into water to hydrolyze the reaction mixture and the resultant hydrolyzate is subjected to dehydrating condensation in a solvent such as xylene or THF to afford a polymer precursor and the polymer precursor is subjected to dehydrating condensation in a solid phase state to provide the objective copolymer containing chemical structural units of formula I [Z1 is a (deuterium-substituted)phenyl] and formula II (Z2 is Z1) as recurring units.
