To stabilize the shift operation of a belt type continuously variable transmission.
The continuously variable transmission has a primary pulley and a secondary pulley each variable in groove width. A belt is wrapped around these pulleys, and a primary cylinder and a secondary cylinder are provided on the primary pulley and on the secondary pulley, respectively. Primary pressure to be supplied to the primary cylinder and secondary pressure to be supplied to the secondary cylinder are regulated by a primary pressure regulating valve 24 and by a secondary pressure regulating valve 23, respectively. The hydraulic pressure ratio of the primary pressure to the secondary pressure is calculated in accordance with the torque ratio of input torque to the maximum transmissive torque and a target shift ratio, and target primary pressure is calculated in accordance with the hydraulic pressure ratio. Meanwhile, target secondary pressure is calculated in accordance with the target primary pressure.
