PURPOSE: A sliding material capable of exhibiting good wear resistance either with or without lubrication, which is obtd. by compounding carbon, amorphous silica and a resin binder in a specified proportion.

CONSTITUTION: 45W70wt% carbon, 5W25wt% amorphous silica and 20W40wt% resin binder are mixed and the resulting mixture is molded by hot pressing. Said amorphous silica includes all the amorphous silicon dioxides and silicate powders. The resin binder includes phenol, polyimide, melamine, polyester, epoxy binder, etc. In addition to said components, it is possible to add a crystalline silicon dioxide, a silicate powder, molybdenum disulfide, boron nitride, lead, etc. as a friction modifier to the composition.
