PURPOSE: To make it possible to double a repeated number without shortening charging time to an power source by operating independently each of flash lamps which performs irradiation from various excitation planes.
CONSTITUTION: In a solid state laser 1, laser light 10 is oscillated even when it is generated with either a flash lamp 6a or a flash lamp 6b. While the flash lamp is emitting light, an area near the top of a slab is intensively excited. However, since an optical axis 5 is reciprocated very often of the bottom in the slab 2, the intensity distribution of the laser light 10 in the cross section is not marked excessively only in the upper part portion so that a uniform intensity distribution is available on the whole. Therefore, if the flash lamps 6a and 6b which performs irradiation from their different excitation planes are arranged to operate independently, the flash lamps 6a and 6b on each side can be operated alternately. In that case, it is possible to double a repeated number of laser oscillation.
