To provide a structure for increasing electron emission current value in a low electric field, particularly a structure useful as a cold cathode element.
In this structure, a part of or entire surface of a metal oxide made substrate material having projections is covered with conductive material, and the tips of the projections are covered with one or more kinds of electron emission material. Preferably the structure has the projections with density of 0.01-10,000 in number per 10 μm×10 μm in area on the substrate material. In particular, this structure is optimal for a cold cathode element application. This structure can increase electron emission current value in a low electric field, and particularly is preferably used for the cold cathode element application.
