PURPOSE: To reduce consumption of a color film ribbon, by a method wherein printing data quantity memory areas for each color, a residual ribbon quantity memory area and a ribbon length memory area are provided, and values stored in the memory areas are compared with each other to perform control.
CONSTITUTION: The values stored in the printing data quantity memory areas 5, 6, 7 for each color and the value stored in the residual ribbon quantity memory area 11 are compared with each other by a comparing means 8, and a printing part 9 and a ribbon-driving part 14 are controlledly driven in accordance with the comparison results. After printing, the quantity of the data printed is subtracted from the value stored in the residual ribbon quantity memory area 11 by a calculating means 10, and the memory area 11 is renewed. An initial value setting means 13 sets an initial value in the ribbon length memory area 12 to the value stored in the residual ribbon quantity memory area 11 in response to a signal from a ribbon leading-end detecting part 15.
