PURPOSE: To obtain a copolymer having excellent heat-resistance, impact resistance and moldability and useful as an interior trim of automobile, etc., by polymerizing an aromatic vinyl monomer and a maleimide monomer under specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An aromatic vinyl monomer (e.g. styrene) and (B) a maleimide monomer (e.g. phenylmaleimide) are subjected to radical copolymerization while separately and slowly supplying the monomers to a reactor containing an organic solvent (e.g. toluene) without mixing the monomers beforehand to obtain the objective copolymer having a component B content (y) of 35-65wt.% and a volatile content of ≤1,000ppm and containing ≤3wt% and ≤0.06y of the compound of formula [R1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R2 and R3 are H, (cyclo)alkyl or (substituted) aryl; X1 to X4 are H, alkyl or hydroxyl]. A thermoplastic resin composition can be produced from the copolymer and one or more kinds of other thermoplastic resins such as methyl methacrylate resin.
