Title:
CARBON ELECTRODE MODIFIED BY ION IMPLANTATION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS6077984
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon electrode having improved performance by implanting ions of a metallic or nonmetallic element into the surface layer of a carbonaceous material other than diamond at high density to modify the surface layer. CONSTITUTION:Ions of a metallic element such as Zn, Cd or Ti or a nonmetallic element such as Ar, N or O are implanted into the surface layer of a carbonaceous material other than diamond by >=1X10<16>ions/cm<3>. Glassy carbon, graphite, carbon fiber or the like is used as the carbonaceous material. The surface layer of the carbonaceous material is modified by the ion implantation, and a carbon electrode having improved performance is obtd. By the modification, the reactivity of the electrode with various substances is controlled, and the stability is improved. The resulting carbon electrode is useful as an electrode for electrolysis, a reference electrode, an electrode for a galvanic cell or an electrode for experimenting a microbial cell.
