Abstract:
PURPOSE: To separate docosahexaenoic acid effective for the remedy of arteriosclerosis from the blood of tuna, by extracting the blood with acetone, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Docosahexaenoic acid which is a straight-chain highly unsaturated fatty acid having 6 double bonds at 4,8,12,18,21-,4,8,11,14,17,20- or 4,7,10,13,16, 19-positions, and existing abundantly in the blood of tuna, is prepared, e.g. by treating the whole lipid mixture extracted from the blood with acetone, and purifying the obtained acetone-insoluble phospholipid mixture taking advantage of the solubility of the lecithin metal salt complex, or purifying the mixture by the column chromatography using aluminum oxide or silica gel (preferably using both compounds in combination).
