Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject vinyl alcohol based polymer retaining water solubility of a vinyl alcohol based polymer (PVA), having low glass transition temperature and improved heat resistance useful for film, etc., by including in a specific ratio a specific monomer unit having poly(oxyalkylene) group on the side chain. SOLUTION: This polymer includes 0.01-15 mole.% of a monomer unit having a poly(oxyalkylene) group of formula I [R1 is a 2-4C (substituted) alkylene; R2 is H or an organic residue; X is H, an alkali metal such as sodium, etc.; n is 1-100]. The polymer is obtained by saponifying a copolymer of a vinyl ester monomer (e.g. vinyl acetate, etc.), commonly used in synthesis of PVA and a monomer of formula II [e.g. methyl 2-(ω-n-butoxypolyethylene glycoxy) acrylate, etc.], in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, etc., in a solvent such as methanol, etc., at 20-180 deg.C for 0.1-20 hours.
