In the present invention, autofocus precision of a subject is increased by means of causing not only a face region but also a head-hair region to be an autofocus region. The autofocus system is provided with: an imaging unit that captures a subject image formed by means of an optical system; a face region detection unit that, from a captured image captured by means of the imaging unit, detects a face region that excludes the head-hair region of a person; a first AF region setting unit that sets the face region detected by the face region detection unit as a first autofocus region; a second AF region setting unit that, in a manner so that the head-hair region neighboring the face region is included, expands the first autofocus region set by the first AF region setting unit, and sets the expanded region including the head-hair region and the first autofocus region as a second autofocus region; and an autofocus unit that adjusts the focus of the optical system in a manner so that the focus matches the subject of the second autofocus region set by the second AF region setting unit.
