The electronic device comprises: a sensor unit for acquiring sensing data; a projection unit; and at least one processor, which identifies a first position corresponding to a first portion of a user and a second position corresponding to a second portion of the user if a preset gesture of the user is identified on the basis of the sensing data, the first position and the second position indicating the preset gesture, acquires direction information corresponding to the preset gesture on the basis of the first position and the second position, acquires a projection position corresponding to the preset gesture on the basis of the position of a projection surface and the direction information, and controls the projection unit such that a projection image is projected on the basis of the projection position.
