A head-mounted display is provided with an optical system comprising a light source for emitting light for drawing an image to be recognized by a user and an optical element for guiding the light to the eyes of the user. Moreover, the head-mounted display is provided with a first detection means for directly detecting the light emitted from the light source without using the optical system, a second detection means for detecting the light emitted from the light source by using the optical system, an abnormality determination means for determining if there are any abnormalities on the basis of the combination of the detection results obtained by means of the first detection means and the second detection means, and a control means for controlling the light emission of the light source on the basis of the determination result from the abnormality determination means. As a consequence, it is possible to appropriately determine if there are any abnormalities on the basis of the detection results from both the first detection means and the second detection means.
