This image generation unit comprises: three light modulation elements, including a first light modulation element, a second light modulation element, and a third light modulation element, that modulate illumination light on the basis of an image signal to generate image light; and a color separation/synthesis prism including a first prism, a second prism, and a third prism, the prisms being arranged in order along the direction of the optical axis of the image light, and respectively guiding illumination light to the three light modulation elements. Provided between the second prism and the third prism are: an adhesive surface that is bonded over a range including a first region that emits the image light and a second region through which the illumination light passes; and an air gap formed over a range including a third region that receives OFF light reflected on a dichroic mirror surface between the first prism and the second prism, from OFF light generated by the third light modulation element.
