An image processing system accepts a plurality of images, selects a standard image, when extracting a partial image for complementing a too bright region / too dark region in the standard image from a reference image, using a corrected image obtained by converting each of the images into multiple values according to respective luminance component categories, searches for a region where the shapes of respective regions included in the corrected image of the standard image and the corrected image of another image match, and generates a synthetic image by complementing the too bright region / too dark region in the standard image using an image portion corresponding to the region of the matching and an appropriately bright region. The images are each dividable into three values of a too bright region, an appropriately bright region, and a too dark region, and have a relationship in which a boundary luminance between the too bright region and the appropriately bright region is equal to a boundary luminance between the appropriately bright region and the too dark region of a darker region having an adjacency relationship therewith.
