Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical element in which there are no discontinuous portions between lenses, and uneven light distribution and decreased optical efficiency due to scattering and the like are suppressed. Provided is an optical element capable of diffusing incident light in a prescribed diffusion range, the optical element including a transparent body having recesses and projections on at least one surface thereof, the diffusion range being prescribed as being inside a single closed curve in a prescribed plane, the recesses and projections having non-periodic ridges and valleys, the recesses and projections not having portions where the slope of the recesses and projections changes 180 degrees in the width range of λ/(n1 – n0), where λ is the wavelength of the light, n1 is the refractive index of the transparent body, and n0 is the refractive index of a medium on the periphery of the transparent body, and regions of the recesses and projections that have a slope such that incident light is emitted to a region outside the diffusion range according to Snell's law being 5% or less of the entire region of the recesses and projections.
