Abstract:
Provided are: a porous electrode substrate having a high sheet strength, a low production cost, and sufficient gas permeability and conductivity; and a method for producing same. Further provided are: a precursor sheet used in the preparation of the substrate; a membrane electrode assembly using the substrate; and a solid polymer fuel cell. The method for producing a porous electrode substrate contains the following steps [1]-[3]: [1] a step for producing a sheet-shaped article wherein short carbon fibers (A) have been dispersed; [2] a step for producing a precursor sheet by means of adding a water-soluble phenol resin and/or a water-dispersible phenol resin to the sheet-shaped article; and [3] a step for carbonizing processing the precursor sheet at a temperature of at least 1000°C.
