A variable lift valve gear of an internal combustion engine. A rocker arm (15), with an intermediate section of which a support member (support roller)(19) is in contact, is provided between an intake valve (6) and a cam (8) on a rotating cam shaft (9). One end (15a) the rocker arm is made to be in contact with the cam (8) so that the rocker arm is rotated in a rocking motion by the rotation of the cam. A cam surface (24) is rotated at the other end (15c) of the rocker arm, and the cam surface (24) opens and closes the intake valve (6) as the rocker arm rotates in a rocking motion. The rocker arm is made to be in contact with a support guide member (25) such that the rocker arm is prevented from moving in the direction to separate from the valve, and that point on the support member with which the rocker arm is in contact is adapted to be movable in the longitudinal direction of the rocker arm. Adjustment of valve timing of the valve is facilitated and durability of the valve gear is increased. The guide member (25) is adapted to be rotatable about the cam shaft (9), and the support member is rotationally adjusted by a rotation adjustment mechanism (28) and fixed at that adjusted position so as not to be rotatable.
