Abstract:
PURPOSE:To allow stable coating characteristics to be exhibited over a long period by converting at least a part of the surface of a metal member into ceramics and forming a ceramic layer on the surface. CONSTITUTION:Reactive gas and assist gas 5 are fed to the surface of a metal member 1 and laser beams 4 generated from laser are condensed with a condenser 3 in a condensing optical system 2 and projected on the surface of the member 1 to form a ceramic reaction product 6 in the surface of the member 1. Powdery starting material 8 for ceramics in a powder feeder 7 is then fed to the surface of the reaction product 6 with carrier gas 9 and laser beams 4 are similarly projected on the surface of the fed starting material 8 to sinter or melt the starting material 8. A rigid dense ceramic layer 10 of an arbitrary thickness is formed.
