Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to develop a technique for providing a novel metal-matrix composite capable of stably suppressing problems of a conventional compound material formed from a reinforcement material and a matrix material such as metal, the problems being, for example, inferior mechanical characteristics such as tensile and bending strengths to those of a single-phase material such as metal, coarser surface roughness due, for example, to chipping and wear of a cutting edge caused by fall-off a reinforcement material or collision of a blade with a hard reinforcement material during precision shaping machining, and inferior workability. Provided is a metal-coated metal-matrix composite which: is formed by compounding a matrix material such as pure metal with a reinforcement material such as ceramic, wherein the reinforcement material is a porous formed body having dips and bumps regularly arranged on a surface of the porous formed body; and has, on a surface thereof, a continuous integrated metal coating layer formed from the compounded matrix material having the dips and bumps, wherein the metal coating layer has a thickness of 0.5 mm to 5 mm, and the dips and bumps have a height difference of 0.1 mm or more in the range of 50% or less of the thickness of the metal coating layer, and have a periodic shape.
