Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:A 3-n-propyloxy-6-(trans-4'-alkylcyclohexanecarboxy)-phthalonitrile of formula I (R is 1W10C alkyl group).
USE: Nematic liquid crystal analogs for liquid crystal displays, having a large negative dielectric anisotropy value.
PROCESS: 2,3-Dicyano-p-hydroquinone in reacted with a propylating agent, e.g. pentyl p-toluene-sulfonate, in the presence of an alkali to give the monopropyl ether thereof. The ether is then reacted with a trans-4-alkyl-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid halide in a basic solvent, e.g. pyridine, to give the compound of formula I.
