Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymer having broad liquid crystal-developing temperature region, also capable of inducing a smectic phase and useful as an photoconductive material, etc., by copolymerizing an electron-donating (meth) acrylate having a carbazole ring with an electron accepting (meth)acrylate.

CONSTITUTION: This polymer of formula I [A is formula II; B is formula III; R1 and R4 are each H or methyl; R3 and R5 are each a 2-15C alkylene; R3 is H, methyl, ethyl or phenyl; R5 is nitro or cyano; X is direct bond or CH=CH, N=CH, CH=N, COO or OCO; (y) and (1-y) are each a mole fraction of the recurring unit] is obtained by copolymerizing a monomer of formula IV [e.g. 4[6(meth)acryloyloxy alkyloxy]-N-(9-methyl-2-carbazolyl-methylene)aniline, etc.] with a monomer of formula V [e.g. 4-[6-(acryloyloxy) alkyl]oxy]-4'-phenylbenzoic acid].
